Finance history
1602
The VOC held the world's first public IPO on 20 March 1602, creating the first modern stock exchange where anyone could buy and sell shares freely. A maid named Neeltgen Cornelis invested 100 guilders, six months of wages. At its peak the VOC was worth an estimated $7.9 trillion in today's money, more than Apple.

100km of waterways, 1,500 bridges, and 2,500 houseboats. More canals than Venice. All of them were dug by hand in the 17th century by a city of fewer than 200,000 people. The canal ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010.

The first confirmed open-air market was 1622. The guild still operates today with the same colour-coded hats as centuries ago.
