How the day works

Eight people, one van, one very good day

The whole day is built around the size of the group. Eight people fit in a van, and eight people can hear the same story, laugh at the same joke and eat lunch at the same table. By the time we reach the windmills in the afternoon, nobody in the van is a stranger. That is the part guests write to us about afterwards, more often than the flowers.

  No badges, no headsets, no counting heads in a car park. You get in the van at Centraal Station in the morning and you spend the day with the same small group. Solo travellers are in the conversation by the second stop. Couples get to be a couple. Families get room to be a family.

• Guiding on the road, not just at the gate

  The time on the road is part of the tour. Between Keukenhof and Volendam we talk about the past, the present and the future of this country: how the water was beaten, what the flower trade actually is, what Dutch life looks like now. There is humour in it. It is a conversation, not a script read into a microphone.

• Knowledge that arrives sideways

  Nothing is delivered as a lecture. Dates and numbers come attached to something you are looking at through the window, so you still have them a week later at home. Ask anything at any moment. In a group of eight there is always time to answer properly.

• New cars and mini-vans

  The cars and mini-vans are new, and the day is unhurried. Antonis is a licensed guide, VOG screened and first aid certified. A long spring day with several stops should feel restful in between, not like a race between car parks.

• Eight people, one van, one route

  Whether a day calls for a car, a van or a bus, we look for the matched to the group solution for that route and that group. Eight people sharing one van instead of four hire cars is already most of the answer on this tour.

• Tastings at family places, not tourist theatres

  The cheese and clog farm is a working family business, and the tastings are arranged by Antonis with people he knows. That is the standard for every stop where somebody hands you something to eat: family run and real, never a purely touristic operation built to move coaches through a shop.

• Water on board, and books for the road

  Water is provided on every trip. There are books on board if you feel like reading on the drive down. Small things, and they are the difference between a long day and a long day that felt easy.

• A short film at the end

  At the end of every tour we give you a short edited video of the day. Not a folder of raw clips, an actual little film. Most people expect photos and are surprised by this.

• We are local, so we know what to do

  If someone loses a phone, a wallet or a passport, or takes a fall, you are not alone in a foreign country with a number that rings out. Antonis lives here, speaks the language, is first aid certified, and knows who to call and where to go. It rarely happens. When it does, it matters more than anything else on this list.

• The best food and drink in whatever town we stop in

  Lunch in Volendam is free time on purpose, because the good places are small and personal. You get told exactly where the locals go for kibbeling, for herring, for a proper drink. Same for Amsterdam, if you ask on the drive home.

• The day bends to the day

  We adapt the programme to the group and to the conditions. If the wind turns, if the fields peak early, if the group wants twenty more minutes among the flowers, the plan moves. And we look for the most authentic route between the famous stops, not the fastest one.
