How the day works

What the day is actually like, and what we take care of

Eight people leave Amsterdam in the dark and come back in the dark, and somewhere in between you are all sharing snacks and arguing about the music. That is the point of this one. Here is what sits underneath the good mood, so you know it is looked after before you even get in.

• The same eight people, all day

  From the first coffee at Centraal Station to the last photo at the Grand Place, it is the same small group. Nobody gets counted off a coach, nobody disappears into a crowd of forty. By the time we reach the market you already know who takes their hot chocolate seriously and who is only here for the frites.

• Guiding does not stop when the doors close

  The road is part of the tour. In the van we talk about the past, the present and the future of the Netherlands and Belgium, we laugh, and the humour is real. By the time Brussels appears you understand the country you have just driven through, and none of it felt like a lecture.

• Water and books on board

  Water is provided on every trip, which matters more than you would think on a long December day. There are books on board too, so if you want a quiet half hour with the heating on and the fields going past, take one off the shelf.

• New cars and mini-vans, the greenest option we can get

  The mini-vans are new and well kept, and whether a day calls for a car, a van or a bus we always look for the greenest feasible option. On a run this long it is worth doing properly, and eight people in one vehicle is already the biggest part of it.

• We know where the good stuff is

  At the market you get free time, and you get told exactly where to spend it. Which stall does the hot chocolate properly, where the stoofvlees is worth the queue, which corner locals actually drink in. Same in Amsterdam before we leave, same anywhere we go.

• The programme bends to the day

  December weather in Belgium does what it wants. If the rain sets in, or the timings shift, or the group simply wants longer at the market, we adapt. The plan is a shape, not a timetable to be obeyed while everyone is cold. And we look for the authentic route and the authentic stop, not the quickest one.

• VR and wifi on request

  Antonis can bring VR along if you ask for it in advance, and wifi in the van is free to anyone who wants it. Neither is part of the standard day, so just tell us before the date.

• If something goes wrong, we are local

  A lost phone, a lost glove, an ankle turned on wet cobbles. Antonis is a licensed guide, VOG screened and first aid certified, he lives here, and he knows who to call on both sides of the border. You are not on your own in a foreign city in the dark.

• A film of your day, at the end

  Antonis films along the way and you get a short edited video at the end of the tour. The lights, the market, your group on the way home. It is yours to keep, and it beats a fridge magnet.
