Looking specifically for the windmills? Three of these days stop there, compared side by side on Zaanse Schans from Amsterdam.

If you only have one day
I.

You want the postcard Netherlands.

Zaanse Schans for the working windmills, Volendam for the harbour, Giethoorn for the village with canals instead of streets. One day, three of the images that made you come.

II.

You want something with a date on it.

The Alkmaar cheese market runs Friday mornings, April to October. Keukenhof opens 18 March to 9 May 2027. The Brussels Christmas market runs 27 November to 3 January. Book those around the calendar, not the other way round.

III.

You have seen the postcards already.

Rotterdam, Delft and The Hague for architecture and Vermeer. South Limburg for hills, caves and a Netherlands nobody expects. The Waterland bike day for sixty flat kilometres and a boat crossing.

Before you book

The questions people actually ask.

What is the best day trip from Amsterdam?
It depends on what you want from the day. For windmills, a fishing harbour and the car-free village of Giethoorn in one go, take the Zaanse Schans, Volendam and Giethoorn day. For cheese, the Alkmaar market runs on Friday mornings from April to October. For tulips, Keukenhof runs 18 March to 9 May 2027. For architecture and the Dutch coast, Rotterdam, Delft and The Hague. Every one of them is a small group: eight guests in the van, fifteen on the bike days.
How long is a day trip from Amsterdam?
Most run 10 to 12 hours door to door, with pickup at your accommodation in Amsterdam. The Waterland bike day is 8 hours and about 60 km. The Limburg road trip is the longest at 12 hours, because South Limburg is the far end of the country.
Is Giethoorn worth visiting?
Yes, if you go in a small group and arrive before the coaches. Giethoorn is a village with canals instead of streets, and it is genuinely quiet in the early morning and late afternoon. It is not worth it as a rushed stop in a forty-seat coach at midday, which is how most day trips sell it.
Do I need a car for a day trip from Amsterdam?
No. Every day trip includes door-to-door pickup from your accommodation in Amsterdam in a private van, or starts from a meeting point in the city on the bike days. Antonis guides in English or Greek and the day is shaped around your group.
How many people are on a day trip?
Eight at most in the van, fifteen on the bike days. Schools, companies and larger groups are arranged on request with additional guides.
Not sure which one

Tell me when you are here. I will tell you what is worth the day.

Some days are better in April than in August, and some are not worth doing at all in the wrong week. Send your dates and I will say so plainly.
