Waterland Expedition: Volendam, Marken & The Polders.
It is the Waterland Expedition, a private long distance bike day north out of Amsterdam. You ride to Broek in Waterland and Monnickendam, stop at a family cheese farm, reach Volendam harbour, cross the water to Marken by boat, then return along the dikes. About four hours, up to 15 riders, guided in English or Greek by Antonis Iliadis.

STOP 1 · VILLAGES
We take the ferry to Amsterdam North and cycle straight into the serene Waterland landscape. First stop: Broek in Waterland, known for its pastel wooden houses and history as a retreat for wealthy merchants. Next, we visit the historic harbor of Monnickendam.
STOP 2 · FARM LIFE
Between the villages, we visit a real Dutch cheese farm. You'll taste fresh Gouda and other varieties, watch a short demonstration of the craft, and see how the animals live. A true taste of the countryside.
STOP 3 · THE ICON
We cycle along the famous dike into Volendam. Soak up the lively atmosphere of the harbor, check out the fishing boats, and maybe grab a fresh fish lunch (we know the best non-touristy spots!).
STOP 4 · BOAT CROSSING
Rest your legs! We board the ferry (ticket included) with our bikes for a scenic crossing over the lake to the former island of Marken.
STOP 5 · SCENIC RETURN
After exploring Marken's unique green wooden houses, we cycle back via the dike connecting it to the mainland. We pass through the tiny, picturesque villages of Uitdam and Zuiderwoude, enjoying stunning views of the water and birdlife before arriving back in Amsterdam.
Four hours, open water on both sides of the dike, and wind that decides how the day feels. Here is what is settled before you turn a pedal, so the only thing left to think about is the landscape.
Antonis Iliadis is a licensed guide, VOG screened and first aid certified, guiding in English or Greek. On this ride he is on a bike with you rather than talking at you from the front, and he keeps the group together on the exposed dike stretches.
You ride to Volendam, then cross the water to Marken by boat before the long dike run home. It is the natural halfway point of the day and the reason this distance is doable rather than punishing.
This is our long distance day and the country is flat. Most of the loop runs on dedicated cycle paths and quiet dike roads with almost no cars. You need to be comfortable on a bike for a few hours, not fast.
A short edited film is given at the end of every tour, as a gift. On this route that means the pastel houses in Broek, the cheese farm, the harbour at Volendam, the boat crossing and the long ride home.
Water is provided on every trip. Four hours of open polder with almost no shade matters more than people expect, on hot days and on windy ones.
We keep books on board on our van days. On a bike there is no board, so the reading happens out loud between villages: the past, present and future of this country, with humour, and your questions the whole way.
The cheese farm between Broek and Monnickendam is a working family farm, not a purely touristic one built for buses. You taste fresh Gouda, watch a short demonstration and see how the animals live.
The harbour is lively and much of it is aimed at day trippers. We know the best food, drink and activities in every place we visit, so if you want fresh fish we take you to the spot locals use.
Dutch wind is a real factor on an open dike, more than rain. The programme adapts to your group and to the sky that morning, so we may reverse the loop, change the order of stops or stretch the break at Volendam.
Both are available if you ask when you book. Neither is a standard inclusion and neither is something we push on you.

The Waterland loop works as a full day anchor for a group programme. It is a genuine endurance ride, roughly four hours, with a boat crossing built in and a natural break at Volendam harbour, so it fills a day without filler. We run it privately for up to 15 riders per guide, in English or Greek. For school and university groups we handle the practical side: riding order on the open dike, a pace set for the slowest rider, and a guide who is VOG screened and first aid certified. For corporate groups the open polder does the work a meeting room cannot. Larger parties ride as parallel guided groups on the same route.
