Q 01
Is the Giethoorn Boat Cruise private?
If the weather is good, yes. We use small, whisper-quiet electric boats. Depending on availability, it is typically a private ride with me to be the captain. In bad weather we arrange a covered boat, and a few other guests may share it with us.
Q 02
Is this suitable for kids or seniors?
Absolutely. This family-friendly tour involves minimal walking compared to other trips. The private van offers door-to-door comfort, making it perfect for all ages.
Q 03
Can we customize the stops?
Yes! Since this is a private tour from Amsterdam, the itinerary is flexible. We can spend more time in Zaanse Schans or pause longer for photos on the Dike. It's your day.
Q 04
What about lunch?
Lunch is not included in the price, giving you the freedom to choose. We recommend tasting the famous fresh fish in Volendam or traditional Dutch mini-pancakes in Giethoorn. In any case we arranged for you several tastings.
Q 05
Where does the tour start, and can you bring child seats?
We collect you door to door from your hotel in Amsterdam, usually around 09:00 so we reach Zaanse Schans before the crowds, and Antonis confirms the exact time and address the day before. Child seats are available on request, so tell us the ages when you book. Our group tours meet in front of Centraal Station instead.
Q 06
Is there guiding while we are on the road, or only at the stops?
Guiding runs all day, including in the van. Between Amsterdam, Zaanse Schans, Volendam and Giethoorn we talk about the past, present and future of the country, with humour, and you ask whatever you want. The 30 km dike crossing is the best stretch for it, water on both sides.
Q 07
Do we get a film after the tour?
Yes. A short edited film is given at the end of every tour, free, as a gift. Windmills at Zaanse Schans, the harbour at Volendam, your boat gliding through the Giethoorn canals. Filmed on the day, yours to keep and to share.
Q 08
What is on board the van?
Water is provided on every trip, and there are books to read. It is a long day, roughly 10 to 12 hours with real distance between the villages, so the van is set up to be comfortable rather than just a way of getting there.
Q 09
Do you have VR and wifi in the van?
Free wifi is available on request, so ask when you book and it is ready on the day. VR is available on request only and is never a standard part of this tour. If you want it for the drive to Giethoorn, say so in advance.
Q 10
What kind of vehicle do you use?
A private van, and our cars and mini-vans are new. Whether the day calls for a car, a van or a bus, we always look for the greenest feasible solution. This is a long driving day out to Giethoorn and back, so the vehicle matters for both your comfort and the footprint.
Q 11
What happens if the weather is bad?
The programme adapts to your needs and to the weather. In good weather the Giethoorn cruise is on a small whisper quiet electric boat, typically private with Antonis as captain. In bad weather we arrange a covered boat, which a few other guests may share. We can also reorder the day, give Zaanse Schans more sheltered time or stretch the stop in Volendam.
Q 12
What if something goes wrong during the day?
We are local and we know what to do. A lost phone in Volendam, a passport left in a hotel, a twisted ankle on a Giethoorn bridge. Antonis is first aid certified, speaks the language, knows which pharmacy, which police desk and which clinic, and stays with you until it is sorted.
Q 13
Where do the tastings happen?
Only at family run authentic places. At Zaanse Schans you watch clogs being carved from poplar wood and taste several Dutch Goudas at a traditional farm. In Volendam we have arranged a traditional cookie tasting, stroopwafels and more. We do not use purely touristic farms built for bus traffic.
Q 14
Can you tell us where to eat along the way?
Yes, and this is where a local guide earns his keep. In Volendam you get free time to walk the dike and eat fresh fish by the harbour. In Giethoorn we point you at the right terrace for coffee or Dutch mini pancakes. Lunch and drinks are not included, so you choose.
Q 15
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before the tour and you are refunded to your original payment method within 5 business days. After that the tour is charged in full. For bookings of 9 or more people on one booking: 14 days or more before, full refund; 7 to 14 days before, 75 percent; 48 hours to 7 days before, 50 percent. If we cancel for serious weather, you get a full refund and we offer you another date first.
Q 16
How far in advance should we book?
As early as you can. This is a private van with one guide and one date, and the Giethoorn boat has to be arranged too, so the popular days go first. If your dates are fixed, book them now. ---
