    01

    Zaanse Schans: The Windmills

    STOP 1 • HISTORY

We step into the 18th century. Explore the historic Zaanse Schans, seeing the working industrial windmills that define the Dutch skyline. You'll witness the history of trade, innovation, and water management firsthand in an open-air museum setting.

    02

    Traditional Farm Experience

    STOP 2 • TASTE & CRAFT

We visit a local, traditional farm for a full sensory experience. Watch a live demonstration of how the iconic wooden shoes (clogs) are carved from poplar wood. Then, indulge in an authentic cheese tasting, sampling various Dutch Goudas. A true taste of tradition.

    03

    Volendam & Cookie Tasting

    STOP 3 • VILLAGE VIBES

Next, we explore the labyrinth of the famous fishing village of Volendam. We have arranged a special traditional cookie tasting (Stroopwafels and more) for you to savor. Afterward, enjoy free time to walk the dike, shop for souvenirs, or have a fresh fish lunch by the harbor.

    04

    Crossing the Markermeerdijk

STOP 4 • THE SCENIC DRIVE

This isn't just a drive. It's a documentary experience. We drive across the incredible 30km Dike, surrounded by water on both sides. This surreal landscape is the perfect setting for deep, meaningful conversations about Dutch life and water management. Or, if you prefer, simply recline your seat, enjoy our curated music playlist, and take a peaceful nap as we glide towards Giethoorn.

    05

    Giethoorn: Little Venice

    STOP 5 • THE FINALE

The grand finale. A car-free village with no roads, only canals. We enjoy a relaxing 1-hour boat cruise through the thatched-roof farmhouses and wooden bridges. It's pure magic and the perfect end to our journey. + 1 hour for walking around the village.

What a long day out to three villages actually looks like

Roughly 10 to 12 hours, three villages, a lot of road between them. Here is exactly what you get for it, so nothing is a surprise at 08:45 in your hotel lobby.

  • Heading:** What a long day out to three villages actually looks like **Intro:** Roughly 10 to 12 hours, three villages, a lot of road between them. Here is exactly what you get for it, so nothing is a surprise at 08:45 in your hotel lobby. **We come to your hotel

Door to door pickup from your Amsterdam hotel, usually around 09:00 so we reach Zaanse Schans ahead of the coaches. Antonis confirms the exact time and address the day before. Child seats on request, so tell us the ages when you book.

  • New cars and mini-vans

You are on the road for most of a day, out along the Markermeerdijk and up to Giethoorn. Our cars and mini-vans are new. Antonis is a licensed guide, VOG screened and first aid certified, and the vehicle comes before the schedule.

  • The greenest vehicle that fits your group

Car, van or bus, we always look for the greenest feasible solution. For this route that means a private van sized to your group, never a half empty coach covering the same kilometres.

  • Guiding all day, including on the road

Not a ride with a playlist. Across the 30 km dike with water on both sides we talk about the past, present and future of the country, with humour, and you ask whatever you want. If you would rather recline the seat and sleep before Giethoorn, that is also a completely valid choice.

  • Water and books on board

Water is provided on every trip, and books ride with us. Small things, but on a 12 hour day they are the difference between arriving in Giethoorn fresh and arriving in Giethoorn finished.

  • Free wifi on request, VR on request

Free wifi is available if you ask for it when you book. VR is available on request only. Both are real, both come if you want them, and neither is a standard part of this tour.

  • Tastings only at family run places

The clog carving and the Gouda tasting happen at a traditional working farm. The stroopwafel and cookie tasting in Volendam is arranged with people we know. We do not stop at purely touristic farms built for bus traffic.

  • The day bends to you and to the weather

More time at the windmills, a longer stop on the dike for photographs, a covered boat in Giethoorn if the sky turns. The programme adapts to your needs and to the weather, and we always take the most authentic route rather than the fastest one on the map.

  • We know where to eat in all three villages

Fresh fish by the harbour in Volendam during your free time. The right terrace in Giethoorn for coffee or Dutch mini pancakes. We know the best food, drink and activities in every city we visit and we will tell you honestly which places are worth it.

  • Four hours from home, with a local beside you

A phone left on a boat, a passport in a hotel room, a twisted ankle on a wooden bridge. We are local, we speak the language and we know what to do. You are not alone in a village a long way from Amsterdam.

  • A short film at the end

A short edited film is given at the end of every tour, as a gift. The windmills, the harbour, your boat moving through the canals of Giethoorn. Filmed on the day, not pulled from stock, and yours to keep.

From the field notes

For agencies, operators, schools, universities and companies

We run this day for partners, not only for walk up guests. Agencies and operators use it as the countryside day for clients who want the three icons in one go. Schools and universities use it as a field day on water management and Dutch trade history, with the 30 km Markermeerdijk crossing as the lesson that writes itself. Companies use it for visiting teams, because it is quiet, seated and easy to talk in. New cars and mini-vans, a licensed, VOG screened, first aid certified guide, and one point of contact from the first message to the drop off. Groups larger than 8 run in more than one vehicle on the same date, to the same plan.

  • Door to door pickup from your clients' hotel, or from one address for a whole delegation
  • Maximum 8 guests per van, additional vans on the same date for larger groups
  • Guiding in English or Greek all day, including on the road
  • Licensed, VOG screened, first aid certified guide, new cars and mini-vans, water and books on board
  • Tastings arranged only at family run places we actually know
  • Programme built around your brief, your timings and the weather on the day
  • The short edited film goes to every guest and is yours to share
  • Child seats, free wifi and VR available on request
  • Bookings of 9 or more on one booking follow the group cancellation terms below

Got Questions?

Everything travelers ask us about this tour.

Is the Giethoorn Boat Cruise private?
If the weather is good, yes. We use small, whisper-quiet electric boats. Depending on availability, it is typically a private ride with me to be the captain. In bad weather we arrange a covered boat, and a few other guests may share it with us.
Is this suitable for kids or seniors?
Absolutely. This family-friendly tour involves minimal walking compared to other trips. The private van offers door-to-door comfort, making it perfect for all ages.
    Can we customize the stops?
Yes! Since this is a private tour from Amsterdam, the itinerary is flexible. We can spend more time in Zaanse Schans or pause longer for photos on the Dike. It's your day.
    What about lunch?
Lunch is not included in the price, giving you the freedom to choose. We recommend tasting the famous fresh fish in Volendam or traditional Dutch mini-pancakes in Giethoorn. In any case we arranged for you several tastings.
Where does the tour start, and can you bring child seats?
We collect you door to door from your hotel in Amsterdam, usually around 09:00 so we reach Zaanse Schans before the crowds, and Antonis confirms the exact time and address the day before. Child seats are available on request, so tell us the ages when you book. Our group tours meet in front of Centraal Station instead.
Is there guiding while we are on the road, or only at the stops?
Guiding runs all day, including in the van. Between Amsterdam, Zaanse Schans, Volendam and Giethoorn we talk about the past, present and future of the country, with humour, and you ask whatever you want. The 30 km dike crossing is the best stretch for it, water on both sides.
Do we get a film after the tour?
Yes. A short edited film is given at the end of every tour, free, as a gift. Windmills at Zaanse Schans, the harbour at Volendam, your boat gliding through the Giethoorn canals. Filmed on the day, yours to keep and to share.
What is on board the van?
Water is provided on every trip, and there are books to read. It is a long day, roughly 10 to 12 hours with real distance between the villages, so the van is set up to be comfortable rather than just a way of getting there.
Do you have VR and wifi in the van?
Free wifi is available on request, so ask when you book and it is ready on the day. VR is available on request only and is never a standard part of this tour. If you want it for the drive to Giethoorn, say so in advance.
What kind of vehicle do you use?
A private van, and our cars and mini-vans are new. Whether the day calls for a car, a van or a bus, we always look for the greenest feasible solution. This is a long driving day out to Giethoorn and back, so the vehicle matters for both your comfort and the footprint.
What happens if the weather is bad?
The programme adapts to your needs and to the weather. In good weather the Giethoorn cruise is on a small whisper quiet electric boat, typically private with Antonis as captain. In bad weather we arrange a covered boat, which a few other guests may share. We can also reorder the day, give Zaanse Schans more sheltered time or stretch the stop in Volendam.
What if something goes wrong during the day?
We are local and we know what to do. A lost phone in Volendam, a passport left in a hotel, a twisted ankle on a Giethoorn bridge. Antonis is first aid certified, speaks the language, knows which pharmacy, which police desk and which clinic, and stays with you until it is sorted.
    Where do the tastings happen?
Only at family run authentic places. At Zaanse Schans you watch clogs being carved from poplar wood and taste several Dutch Goudas at a traditional farm. In Volendam we have arranged a traditional cookie tasting, stroopwafels and more. We do not use purely touristic farms built for bus traffic.
Can you tell us where to eat along the way?
Yes, and this is where a local guide earns his keep. In Volendam you get free time to walk the dike and eat fresh fish by the harbour. In Giethoorn we point you at the right terrace for coffee or Dutch mini pancakes. Lunch and drinks are not included, so you choose.
    What is your cancellation policy?
Cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before the tour and you are refunded to your original payment method within 5 business days. After that the tour is charged in full. For bookings of 9 or more people on one booking: 14 days or more before, full refund; 7 to 14 days before, 75 percent; 48 hours to 7 days before, 50 percent. If we cancel for serious weather, you get a full refund and we offer you another date first.
How far in advance should we book?
As early as you can. This is a private van with one guide and one date, and the Giethoorn boat has to be arranged too, so the popular days go first. If your dates are fixed, book them now. ---
