Most Christmas markets are a square with stalls on it. Valkenburg put its markets inside the hill. The caves are hand cut marl, worked out of the rock over centuries, and for six weeks a year they fill with light and stalls and the smell of gluhwein. In 2025 it was voted the best Christmas market in the Netherlands, and seventh best in Europe.

Pickup from your accommodation in Amsterdam. The road south takes about three hours, and it is the part of the country most visitors never see: the land stops being flat, and starts having a shape.

Maastricht, a guided hour
About 1 hour
The oldest city in the country, and the one that feels least like the rest of it. A one hour guided tour of the old centre with Antonis: the river crossing the Romans built on, the squares, the streets that have been trading since before the Netherlands existed. In December the Vrijthof carries the city's own Christmas market, free to walk into.

Beyond the lights: why this town, and why underground.
The caves are not a cave
Nothing here was made by water. For centuries people cut marl, a soft pale limestone, out of the hill to build with, and left tens of kilometres of corridors behind them. Walking the market is walking through that labour, with the chisel marks still on the walls.
Why Valkenburg and not a city square
A Dutch December is dark by half past four and usually wet. A market inside a hill is dry, still and lit, and it holds a steady cool temperature all year. The town has built its whole winter around that one advantage.
The best Christmas market in the Netherlands
For 2025 Valkenburg was voted the best Christmas market in the Netherlands, and placed seventh best in Europe. The town calls itself Kerststad, Christmas Town, and has done for decades. Both results come from a public online vote rather than a jury, which is worth knowing, and the town has leaned into them entirely.

The caves under the town hold more than one Christmas market, and they are genuinely different: one is large, level and busy, the other smaller and older with centuries of drawings on the walls. Which one suits your day depends on your date, your group and what you want from it, so we settle it together rather than printing it here.

A town that moves its Christmas below the surface, with an hour on foot in Maastricht and lunch before it.
There is no upper limit on this day. Two of you fits, and so does a class, a department or a coach. The thing that does not change with the number is the guiding: on a longer vehicle the storytelling simply moves on board, so the three hours south are not dead time. Antonis takes the microphone and the country outside the window gets explained as it goes past, from the moment Amsterdam ends to the moment the hills start. In November and December that road is lit the whole way, and the Christmas feeling starts long before Valkenburg does.

Yes. We buy them for your entry time as soon as your date is fixed. The caves sell timed tickets and the slot is strict, so this is the first thing we lock, and the rest of the day is built around it.
Q 02Which Christmas market do we actually go to?
We decide that with you when you book. There is more than one underground market under Valkenburg and they are not interchangeable: one is large and level, the other is smaller and older. Your date, your group and how much walking you want all change the answer, and so does what still has space on the day.
Q 03When does the season run?
The underground Christmas markets run from 13 November to 30 December. They are closed on 25 December, and after 30 December they are finished for the year, so a trip in the first days of January would not have a market in it.
Q 04Is there a Christmas market in Maastricht too?
Yes, on the Vrijthof square, and it is free to walk into. It runs from 27 November to 27 December, so if your date falls inside that window you get it during the hour on foot without paying anything extra.
Q 05How long is the drive?
About three hours each way. It is the longest of our private days and there is no way around that, which is exactly why the middle of the day is left unhurried.
Q 06Is it cold inside the caves?
They hold a steady cool temperature all year, warmer than a Dutch December outside but cooler than a room. A jacket is right, a heavy coat is usually too much once you are walking.
Q 07Can someone in a wheelchair or with a pushchair come?
One of the underground markets is level and step free with wide corridors, the other has a fixed route and is harder going. Tell us before you book and we will choose the one that works for you. A day with a wheelchair in the group runs at a slower pace, and the programme does not always come out the same. We adapt it around you.
Q 08Do you have child seats?
Yes, on request. Tell us the ages and how many children are coming when you send your dates, and the right seats are fitted before pickup. It is a long day in the vehicle, so it is worth getting exactly right.
Q 09Can we customise this day?
Yes, fully. Combine cities, swap or skip stops, change the pace, add something you read about on the way. It is the part we like most. Free wifi is available on request. Ask for it when you book and it is ready on the day.
Q 11Why is there no price on this page?
Because the day is not the same day twice. The market, the timings and what is open all move with your date, so Antonis quotes it once he knows when you want to go and how many of you there are. Send the dates and you get a straight answer back.
