THE ROAD SOUTH
Three hours down and three hours back, and none of it is dead time. There is music in the car and there are books to read, and there is conversation. We talk about Belgium and the Netherlands, two neighbours that are not the same country at all, and about the cities and villages we pass along the way, seen from the motorway. It is a day out and it is also a kind of lesson, as much of one as you want it to be.
NINETY MINUTES
An hour and a half walking the centre of Bruges, and Antonis leads this part himself. Not a recital of dates. A walk at your pace, with the history told the way you would tell it to a friend, and questions welcome the whole way. The chocolate stop happens inside this hour and a half, so it is not something bolted on at the end of the day.
DURING THE WALK
We go into one place, and it happens while we are walking. Not a chain and not a souvenir shop: a real artisan, one of the eleven left in the city. You try one kind of cookie and one kind of chocolate, both on us, and then you can buy if you want to.
DE HALVE MAAN
The tour of De Halve Maan takes about forty five minutes and it is included in the price of the day, the beer it ends with as well. The old engine room, the fermentation tanks, the bottling line: a brewery that is still working, in the middle of a medieval city.
THE REST OF IT
What is left after the walk and the brewery is yours. Lunch is not included and it is not decided for you: tell Antonis what you feel like eating and you pick from our recommendations, across many different cuisines. We do not recommend a place we have not eaten in ourselves, which is the whole reason the list is short and the whole reason it is worth anything. Then you sit down and take as long as you like. After that the city is yours to wander, with no set menu, no group table and nobody tapping a watch.
AROUND 21:00
Twelve hours after a 09:00 pickup, the day finishes where it started, at your own address. The short edited film of the day is yours, as a gift.
Six hours on the road and six hours in a city only work if everything else is settled before you wake up. Here is what is handled, so the only real decision left to you is where you want to eat.
Private days are collected door to door from your hotel and Antonis confirms the exact time and address the day before. The usual start is 09:00, because Bruges is three hours away and the day is worth starting properly. Our group tours are the ones that meet in front of Centraal Station.
The Netherlands and Belgium are both in the Schengen area, so there is no border control between them and you will most likely not notice the moment you cross. Bring the ID you would normally travel with and that is the end of the paperwork.
We run new cars and mini-vans. Eight travel comfortably in the van and a bigger party simply gets a bigger vehicle, so the number describes the vehicle and never a limit on your booking. On a route that is almost entirely motorway, the condition of the vehicle is the part you feel.
On a private day the guiding does not stop when the doors close. The three hours south are for the two countries, for how they differ and where they touch, and for the towns and villages going past the window. You can also just look out of it. Both are allowed.
There is music in the car, and there are books to read for whoever prefers a quiet hour. Six hours of road is long enough that everybody should be able to spend it the way they want to spend it.
The walking tour of the old centre is led by Antonis, the same person who collected you from your hotel. You are not handed over to a stranger at the city gates and you are not merged into somebody else group.
The De Halve Maan tour takes about forty five minutes and is included when you book. It ends with a beer and that is inside the same ticket. Children have their own ticket for the brewery tour, and the older ones get a soft drink instead of the beer, so tell Antonis the ages when you book.
We go into one real artisan chocolate maker, one of the eleven left in the city, and it happens during the ninety minutes on foot rather than as an extra errand. One kind of cookie and one kind of chocolate are on us. Whether you buy anything after that is entirely your business.

Water is provided on every trip. Tell us the ages of the children when you book and the right seats are in the van. Free wifi is available on request too, if someone needs to work on the motorway.
A short edited film of your day is given to you at the end, as a gift. It costs nothing extra and you do not have to ask for it.
De Halve Maan says its own tour covers four floors and 220 steps, including two steep and narrow staircases, and that it is not suitable for visitors with limited mobility or visual impairment. For anyone who cannot manage that, the brewery offers an experience box with an iPad, headphones and samples of the ingredients, so the tour can be followed at your own pace, and there is a wheelchair lift to the restaurant. Tell Antonis before you book.
The day runs all year and the weather is part of the deal. If it is pouring, we spend longer where there is a roof. If your group wants to stay somewhere longer, the time comes out of something else. The order is a plan, not a contract.
Bruges is three hours from Amsterdam and three hours back, and there is no honest way to hide that. So the road is not something to survive between the interesting parts, it is part of the day. There is music in the car, chosen for the hours rather than for a playlist, and there are books on board for whoever would rather read than talk. And there is the conversation, which is the thing most people remember. We talk about Belgium and the Netherlands, two countries that sit next to each other and are not remotely the same, and about the towns and villages that go past the window, because every one of them has a reason for being where it is. Call it a day trip if you like. It is also a kind of education, and you decide how much of one you want.
