The market has run here since 1365, and on Friday mornings it still works the old way. Carriers in guild colours at a trot under the barrows, wheels laid out in rows, inspectors boring wheels open to smell and taste, buyers and sellers sealing prices with the traditional handclap. We watch it happen from the best corners, then walk Alkmaar's canal-side old town while the square empties.

Alkmaar to Giethoorn crosses the flat, water-ruled Dutch landscape, and the conversation goes with it: polders, dikes, and how this country talked the sea out of the land. Or you recline the seat and rest. It is your day.

A village with canals where streets should be, thatched farmhouses, and little wooden bridges. We take a one-hour boat trip through it, and when the weather is good it is an open boat with Antonis at the helm. Afterwards there is time to walk the paths and let the place be quiet at you.

A private day is not the same day with fewer people in it. It is a different day, because nothing is fixed except the fact that it belongs to you. Here is what that means in practice.
Private guests are collected from their own hotel or apartment in Amsterdam and dropped back at the same door. No meeting point, no standing outside Centraal Station with a coffee looking for a sign. Our group tours meet at the station. This one comes to you.
You spend a good part of this day inside a vehicle, so it matters. We run new cars and mini-vans, and Antonis is a licensed guide, VOG screened and first aid certified. On the long run east to Giethoorn, that steadiness is the whole point.
The open-boat call is made on the day, by someone who reads Dutch weather for a living. Sun means an open boat with Antonis at the helm. If the sky turns, the day is simply reordered around it. You are never locked into a printed schedule.
The road is part of the tour. In the van we talk about the past, the present and the future of this country, you ask whatever you actually want to know, and there is a lot of laughing. People are often surprised that the road stretch turns out to be their favourite part.
Car, mini-van or bus, we always look for the greenest feasible solution for the group we are carrying. Not a badge on a website. A choice made each time a vehicle is booked for a private day.
Water is provided on every trip. There are books in the van too, so if you want twenty quiet minutes on the road while someone else naps, you have something good in your hands.

The market dates back to 1365. The Cheese Carriers Guild still runs it in their costumes, with a specific gait under the barrows. We explain the secrets of the trade.
Prices on the Waagplein are still agreed the traditional way: buyer and seller slap hands, calling numbers, until the final clap seals it. It looks like theatre. It is real trading, and the final clap is the contract.
A village built on peat digging, where the dug-out channels became the roads. No cars in the old centre, just boats, bridges and thatched roofs. An hour on the water here explains it better than any text.
The cheese market runs only on Friday mornings, 10:00 to 13:00, from the last Friday of March to the last Friday of September. This day exists only when the market does. That is the whole point of it.
